چکیده
This paper surveys topics that presently define the state of the art in parallel simulation. Included in the tutorial are discussions on new protocols, mathematical performance analysis, time parallelism, hardware support for parallel simulation, load balancing algorithms, and dynamic memory management for optimistic synchronization. 1This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under NASA Contract Nos. NASl-18605 and NASl-19480 while the author was in residence at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE), NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA 23681-0001. Research was also supported in part by NASA grants NAG-l-1060 and NAG-l-995, NSF grants ASC 8819373 and CCR-9201195. 2This research was supported in part by Innovative Science and Technology contract number DASG60-90-C-0147 provided by the Strategic Defense Initiative Office and managed through the Strategic Defense Command Advanced Technology Directorate Processing Division, and NSF grant CCR-8902362.

Preconditioning for the Fluid Dynamic Equations
The selection of articles for this issue of the ICASE Research Quarterly departs from the previous policy of presenting technical articles covering a variety of active research areas at ICASE; instead, the articles are devoted to a single topic: convergence acceleration in CFD. The articles for this special issue, solicited by Dr. Jim Jones, Staa Scientist at ICASE, discuss convergence accelera...

Runtime time preprocessing plays a major role in many efficient algorithms in computer science, as well as playing an important role in exploiting multiprocessor architectures. We give examples that elucidate the importance of run time preprocessing and show how these optimizations can be integrated into compilers. To support our arguments, we describe transformations implemented in prototype m...

This paper is solely devoted to spectral iterative methods including spectral multigrid methods. These techniques are explained with reference to simple model problems. Some Navier-Stokes algorithms based on these techniques are mentioned. Qesults on transition simulation using these algorithms are presented. t The research for the author was supported under the National Aeronautics and Space A...
متن کاملA "conservative" approach to parallelizing the Sharks World simulation
This paper describes how we parallelized a benchmark problem for parallel simulation, the Sharks World. The solution we describe is conservative, in the sense that no state information is saved, and no "rollbacks" occur. Our approach illustrates both the principal advantage and principal disadvantage of conservative parallel simulation. The advantage is that by exploiting lookahead we find an a...
متن کاملIca Experiments in Automated Load Balancing
One of the promises of parallelized discrete-event simulation is that it might provide significant speedups over sequential simulation. In reality, high performance cannot be achieved unless the system is fine-tuned to balance computation, communication, and synchronization requirements. As a result, parallel discrete-event simulation needs tools to automate the tuning process with little or no...
